Baked Goods
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
2 cups chocolate chips
Cream together butter and shortening. Gradually add sugars, creaming thoroughly. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt; blend into creamed mixture. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips. ( At this point, chill dough for a few min. or let it stand at cool room temp for about 30 min.; this allows the dough to firm up, and cookies will keep their shape better during baking. )
Drop batter by spoonfuls ( use a slightly rounded tablespoon or 15 mL measure ) unto lightly greased baking sheets. With your hands, flatten cookies slightly to give an even thickness of about 1/2 in.
Bake in 375 F oven for 8 to 9 min., or until golden brown around edges and still slightly underbaked in centre.
Remove from oven and let stand on baking sheets for 5 min. ( cookies will continue to brown a bit more and wrinkle slightly in centre). Then remove to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 50 cookies.
